UIDAI Launches Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK for Banks and Fintechs - CIO Mogul India

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and a dedicated sandbox to help banks, fintech companies, insurers and other organisations integrate Aadhaar face authentication directly into their mobile applications.

The move is aimed at making digital identity verification faster, simpler and more seamless for customers.

What is the new Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK?

The SDK allows organisations to integrate Aadhaar face authentication directly into their Android and iOS applications.

Previously, users could be required to use the FaceRD application during the authentication process. With the new SDK, organisations can build the face-authentication process directly into their own apps, reducing app switching and improving the overall onboarding experience.

Built-in security features

Security is a key part of the new system. The SDK includes AI and machine-learning-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing capabilities to help distinguish genuine users from attempts to manipulate the authentication process.

Authentication data is also handled using secure and encrypted processes, supporting the security requirements of financial and digital services.

Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox

UIDAI has also introduced a dedicated sandbox that allows developers and testing teams to evaluate the technology before deploying it in production.

The sandbox can be used to test:

  • Face capture and liveness detection

  • User consent and provisioning

  • Authentication responses

  • Error and failure scenarios

  • Network timeouts and interruptions

  • Spoofing and other test conditions

This gives organisations an environment to test their integration and identify issues before offering the service to customers.

Why it matters for banks and fintechs

Digital onboarding is a critical part of banking, lending, insurance and fintech services. Any additional step in identity verification can create friction and increase customer drop-offs.

By integrating Aadhaar face authentication directly into their applications, financial institutions can potentially create a smoother onboarding journey while maintaining identity verification and security requirements.

A step forward for digital identity

UIDAI's face authentication technology has already been adopted across government and private-sector use cases. According to the report, it has processed more than 500 crore transactions and has been adopted by nearly 200 entities.

The new SDK and sandbox could further expand its use across banking, insurance, fintech, telecom and other digital services.

The larger shift is clear: digital identity verification is becoming more integrated into the customer experience.

For businesses, the priority will be to combine this convenience with strong security, privacy and consent practices.
